strawberry-sour cream-brown sugar ice cream

"let me have my own way in exactly everything and a sunnier and pleasanter creature does not exist..."

thomas carlyle

This quote is so apt when it comes to my family and ice cream. Everyone become a sunnier and pleasanter person. If only for a minute or two.

strawberry-sour cream-brown sugar-ice cream: (adapted from The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz)

makes about 1 1/4 quarts

(The best thing about this ice cream is how easy it is to make but the complexity of flavors.)

1 pound fresh strawberries, rinsed and hulled
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon vodka
1 cup sour cream
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

Slice the strawberries and toss the in a bowl with sugar and vodka, stirring until the sugar begins to dissolve. Cover and let stand at room temperature for 1 hour, stirring every so often.

Pulse the strawberries and their liquid with the sour cream, heavy cream, and lemon juice in a blender or food processor until almost smooth but still slightly chunky.

Refrigerate for 1 hour, then freeze in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Tasting Notes: Tangy and sweet. The brown sugar gives it a depth of flavor that regular sugar can't do. If you never have had whole strawberries dipped in sour cream and brown sugar, try it. Then make the ice cream it tastes exactly the same.

I really want strawberry ice cream, especially with vodka in it, except the damn big dog keeps eating my strawberries. I need to get up earlier. Todd.

Deja vu.

I love seasonal strawberries. So red and beautiful. You know I am not likely to make this soon, but I'd have a scoop if I were there!

Mmm. Reminds me of a dessert my mother used to make. Green grapes in a dish, sour cream slightly sweetened and with a dash of vanilla blobbed over the grapes. Brown sugar sieved over the sour cream and quickly run through the broiler (or torched). Simple and good.

Yes I have done that dip with strawberries and it's fabulous! The ice cream sounds to die for as well. It's time for me to freeze the ice cream bowl!

Dang. Maybe this will finally be the year I get an ice cream maker. I refuse to use the nasty, rusted, 100-year-old one my husband dug out from a closet and declared "perfectly fine." Gross.

omg do I have to get an ice-cream maker now? Because I don't think I'm allowed...The Boss has made a rule that all appliances and furniture entering the house must cause the exit of a similarly sized piece of furniture or appliance. I'm sure this is so we don't end up having to be lifted out of our house by cranes because the door is blocked with rubbish but instead I'm going to take it as The Boss keeping me from making this icecream.

He's only hurting himself.

Damn. Now I have to go buy an icecream maker. This looks absolutely perfect.

Ya know what? My family would be alot happier and pleasanter too if I would make some homemade ice cream. This looks amazing and seems simple enough. I guess I will invest in an ice cream maker! Any suggestions on a good brand that doesn't break the bank?

@ lilsis

this is the one i use...http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-ICE-30BC-Indulgence-2-Quart-Automatic/dp/B0006ONQOC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1240859009&sr=8-2... it's a cuisinart, with the a bowl that you have to freeze, which takes up room in your freezer... and it takes 24hrs to chill... those are it's only two drawbacks. i really don't know about any other ice cream makers because i recieved mine as a gift.

miss musing magpie... hmmm, grape ice cream or grape granita... you got me thinking.

wake up todd!!!!!

@tiger lily... i bet you can find something that you can get rid of!!! come on who doesn't like homemade ice cream. the boss will love you forever.

@going country... can't you get lock jaw or something. i expect you to use your imagination and find someway to make ice cream.

@margaret.... busted! i read the nyt article too. and i was in the middle of writing this post and nothing was coming to me but that damn quote because it fit our family so well so i just gave up and let the quote do all the talking.

Basically Margaret's comment was my comment - bet we'd be BFFs.

I serve strawberries with sourcream & brown sugar for summer parties and no one ever thinks they will like it, but I have yet to meet a non-convert!

Love your blog - I read often but have yet to comment. Couldn't resist this time :)

I wish I liked ice cream. Of course I would probably weigh 800 pounds with something that looks this good!

Thanks Krysta!
I really appreciate the info on the ice cream maker!

My family will be so happy!!!

I'm not even a sweet eater, but you're killin me with these ice cream recipes! I might be in serious trouble with my very own ice cream maker!

Thanks to my mom, my kids will almost never eat a strawberry unless it's dipped in sour cream and brown sugar. I would totally be the best mom in the whole world if I made this! (at least until their bowls were empty!)
