Stickin' It To The Little Guy

*pulled from google images...blogs.edweek.org.

Sigh. The lovely politicians of California, both Democrats and Republicans, can't get their shit together. They have failed {AGAIN} to get a state budget passed. Every year around this time this is what you hear on the news cycle 24/7, 'The legislature is deadlocked. Budget. It's so and so fault...yada, yada, yada.'

This year, our governator decided he was going to sign an emergency order to lay-off 20,000 part time and temporary workers and some other workers will be getting paid the federal minimum wage of 6.60. California's minimum wage is 8.00! Just so California won't bounce a check. All laid-off workers will get re-hired after the legislators pass a new budget and if you are getting paid minimum wage you will receive back pay retroactive from yesterday's date. So what's my problem...

1. California is the most expensive state to live in. Check
2. Gas is 4.00 a gallon... so is milk. Check
3. Foreclosures. Check
4. Some of these worker's that are being laid off or their wages lowered to the bare minimum will have to get aid from the very state that did this to them thus creating more of a problem. Idiocy? Check! Check! and let's just add one more check to the checks. CHECK!

Riddle me this... Why won't the same people who can't balance our budget take a pay cut? I mean it's okay to do it to their constituents... why don't they bite the bullet and work for free and save the little guy? oh that's right... they are politicians.

Note to any politicians reading this blog:

This is one example of why people hate our government. Next time you wonder why people don't give a shit about politics and the government... take a look in the mirror.

A food post later on today with the boy who has stolen my heart. (i.e. not my husband or Bourdain)

i was just thinking this very thing yesterday about general motors. why are they firing all these people instead of just cutting the management salaries down?!?!?! you could probably save more money cutting 100 managers' salaries than firing 1000 factory workers.

Do not EVEN get me started on politicians. I worked at the Arizona State Senate for a year, and while there I discovered that as stupid as most politicians may APPEAR in the media, they are in actuality much, much stupider. It's frightening, really.

There are two things politicians love, money and power.

Since there can never be enough money or power this is this crap proliferates. It's sad, annoying and just downright wrong especially when taking a job as a public servant.

It will never change, it's disgusting.

Sigh. Even in the Federal Office that I used to work for, folks have been scuttling around worried "about the California situation" since February. I don't know enough about this state yet... why can't it get it's act together? I mean, all states are having trouble with their budgets these days, but why is California's problem so whopping huge?

*neen... california is one of only three states that requires a 60 percent vote from the legislators to pass the state budget. in other words they use it to hijack the system until their party 'gets' what it wants. both parties do this to everyone's dismay. welcome to california.

It's sad how many utterly and ridiculously wealthy people live in California, but suddenly some workers are making $6.60/hr to save the state?

I live in Michigan, you know, the auto capital of the flippin' country. Our whole state is slowly crumbling around us and NO ONE has ANY SOLUTION!

I feel ya. Stupid politicians. And I vote, at every election, including local ones, so I'm allowed to bitch about the government.

Yes, you live in California where they can't pass a budget and cut wages of state workers. That sucks.

But I live in a state where 1) the citizens voted to ban civil unions, 2) one state legislator returned a copy of the Koran given him by an interfaith alliance saying he didn't think his constituents would want him reading such heresy, and 3) where another state legislator WITH A GAY SON said homosexuals pose more threat than terrorists to the American way of life. (Her name is Sally Kern. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFxk7glmMbo

The only satisfaction is that the same state legislator was recently turned away from the Capital for trying to carry a gun through the metal detector. Sally Kern is packing?! That woman has had some death threats sent her way!

Normally I don't rag on my home state, but we elect some real idiots.

*magpie...i forgot all about Sally, she's a little batty, actually a lot batty. you win.

New York, at least the down state region, is at least as expensive as California. Cheap gas is $4.16 (yesterday).

My school taxes went up 50% in 2007 and the school board was ordered to make a single refund to an over charged company of a quarter billion (yes billion) dollars.

Any politician is almost certainly in the best job they will ever have. They will do anyting to get re-elected.

Check! And where do you find gas for $4 in California? It's above $4.50 here in San Jose. My husband and I discussed this exact issue last night. At least Arnold donates his salary to chairity...how about all those that won't balance the budget? To bad we can't make them work for minimum wage.

Amen. And Amen. I can't even write about politicians...my heart rate goes up to dangerously high levels and my blood pressure skyrockets...they're all a bunch of egocentric asses...haven't heard the term govenator before...good one! So sorry you have him for a govenor...I'd offer a trade but ours is worse.

I totally agree! We were just discussing this endlessly the other day at work. Those F*%^$#@! in the capital get HUGE expense accounts that are used shamlessly on private matters too. While they go wine and dine, the rest of the honest working folks get paid under the minimum wage? Not fair!

I was going to say almost the same thing as Jack! It's not just politicians. Companies that are not doing well, making lay offs and whatnot and the executives are still getting $100,000's in bonuses and whatnot. They claim it hurts them to do the lay off too but they are still taking their bonuses. I am not sure if this is the US or if this is human nature but it's definitely not just the government.

Wait were you standing in my kitchen and I did not see you!! My Brother who lives in another state came home for a visit and we were on this very topic and it makes me sick - I was born and raised in So Cal and the current condition of our state is insane!! We generate more revenue than most countries and we are the amount of wealth here is sickening and yet our government does nothing but piss it away. However if you are not here legally it is like you just won the lottery - Free healthcare and education. Hmmm would we get that same treatment in their country.
Our state has the money to pay all the workers and the programs and then some - It is not because of the lack of funds it is because of all the a**holes in office that missappriate and use it for their personal adgenda - not for the peoples. Case and point, Jack Scott AKA stupid ass elected official from Pasadena who decided to wage war on Mylar Balloons - are you freakin kidding me. No he has to waste our money and time on that instead of putting his resources towards I don't know something important.
Not so much!! Ok now that my blood pressure is up I need to go grab a bottle of wine to relax.

Great topic and so close to home for so many of us...
