Only Me... Part Two

If you can say anything about beet ice cream, it's that she definitely takes a good picture. Very photogenic. Tasty...not so much.

1. How do you get beets not to taste like dirt? I'm serious. All I taste is dirt. I washed them, peeled them, pureed them, strained, oh hey did I mention strain like five million times? added sugar, strained again. Dirt. Dirt. Dirt. WTF?!

2. Does Thomas Keller have some sort a pixie dust to make people magically like beets? Because I have thought about this long and hard and that's all I can come up with. JuJu, Pixie Dust, Magic Wand, Witchcraft. Definitely Witchcraft or some sort of Voodoo, I'm not sure which.

3. When I get to French Laundry. I'm going to ask about beet ice cream. I'm going to embarrass myself over beet ice cream.

Especially when I tell them my dog liked it. Look at her tongue go. I'll save the story about the car, a hot full cup of Starbucks vanilla latte, and Roxy for a later date.

My kitchen is clean, finally. Hallelujah! I never said I was a clean cook.

I'm not going to list this as a failure. It technically turned out rather well. The ice cream was beautiful. It turned out like ice cream should. Nice and creamy with a velvety mouth feel. I just couldn't get over the taste. It tasted vaguely familiar but I couldn't place it, which aggravated me even further.

Preview of next week....

1.Spending twenty dollars at the African Carribean store. Did you think I forgot?

2.Big post coming up. Nervous. Not sure if you'll like it.

3.Award presentation. Taking bribes, stuffing the ballot box, and tampering with voting machines. Good fun for all.

That vaguely familiar taste that aggravated me so much? I figured it out...

umm, no I didn't.

Arghhhhhhhhh!

maybe your beets weren't primo? because obviously your technique was.

or maybe you just really hate beets and even ice cream can not help...

I don't know, it has a quirky appeal to me. Maybe because I didn't have to spend THREE days making it.

This is still making me laugh. I'm sure Thomas is running around Yountville right now freaking out over the dog licking the beet cream! Love it.

*fret...didn't you eat at per se with french laundry at home? did you have the ice cream? if you did tell me how it tasted, i really want to know where i went wrong. if it was how i prepared the beets or did i use the wrong type of beet. i want to like this recipe and i don't want the first thing i cook from t.k. to be bad. i mean this is one of the places i want to eat at before i die. so i don't want to go in with a failure under my belt. HELP ME!

*mpm... i'm sure if you like beets you'd like this. it holds a quirky appeal to me also.

*queen pig... i don't want him freaking out. hell, i don't even want him knowing about it. well, i kinda do, just so he could let me know where i went wrong. i know you've been to f.l. did you have the beet ice cream?

bummer about the beets. Kind of takes the virtuous feeling out of the challenge? Or maybe it Confirms your virtuosity for correctly calling the recipe nasty in the first place. In either case, poo.

But I'm looking forward to the African Carribean store! I hadn't forgotten, since it was your poll that inspired me to check our local Indian grocery, and we've been faithfully stocking up on Indian sweets ever since (I've got an open box right next to me...ah, indulgences). You may not have Indian, but we don't have Afro-Caribbean, so I'm definitely looking forward to your delicious discoveries!

you should be hella proud of yourself for making this, even if you weren't fond of it. and you may never be fond of it, ya know? congrats anyway.

looking forward to whatever the big bad post is. :)

Now that you've had beetroot ice cream, how about avacado ice cream? Yep- was shown on the british version the apprentice last week.

I am so impressed that you would take the time to make this ice cream to begin with! You must be quite the adventurer....with the pushback I get from my crowd, I only usually attempt things that *might* be a sure thing! I'm in total awe of you tho' -- and Roxy. I don't know if my Daisy Dog would eat beet ice cream!! ;-)

such fortitude! i'm afraid i would've given up long ago. actually, i'm such a pansy that i wouldn't have attempted beet ice cream to begin with, but we won't get into that. my point is that i admire your grit. :)

maybe the people who like beets are the people who ate dirt as kids and it is a nostalgia thing?

I am so with you. Beets = dirt. They simply taste like dirt. No ifs ands or buts!

You are a much better woman than I am for actually trying this! You should be proud of yourself!

No, NO, NO !!! You got the flavor description all wrong !!
It's not dirt you're tasting, but the wonderful flavors of the EARTH! You are tasting the EARTHY sweetness, EARTHY flavors and EARTHY aromatics that these bulbs bring! :D
Besides, did you try it with the chocolate sauce we suggested?
I applaud you for the open mind and challenge to try this dish!!! You've walked the walk and now you can talk the bad talk all you want! :)
Still, we like red beet ice cream!!!!!

see white on rice couple ate dirt as children and are totally hankering to do it again but they know it isn't socially acceptable so they label it earthy and eat beets! i'm not sure where the chocolate sauce fits in though. haha. (kidding! kidding!)
